More employee well-being initiatives needed now
June 19, 2019
As the 16th Quality of Life at Work Week takes place in France from June 17 to 21, 2019, research by France’s job market research and statistics division* has sharpened the focus on people’s perceptions of their working conditions in France.
According to its survey, 45% of working people are “always” or “often” rushed at work, while about 25% feel the need to hide their emotions and pretend to be in a good mood.
Furthermore, 30% report that having suffered from systematic hostile behavior from at least one person in the workplace in the last 12 months.
The World Health Organization defines a healthy workplace as a place where workers and managers use a continual improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and well-being of workers.
Is company culture a key factor in improving the quality of life at work?
Company culture, which encompasses all of a company’s behaviors toward its employees and customers, does appear today to be a driver of workplace quality of life.
A negative culture at work can adversely affect employee health, increase absenteeism and ultimately erode productivity. An “unhealthy” work environment may increase the risk of accidents, work-related diseases and even depression. Both stress and dissatisfaction at work are detrimental to employee health: it has been shown that they contribute to increased alcohol consumption, tobacco use, and weight gain.
MAXIS GBN has therefore published a whitepaper on the topic, called “Workplace Culture: Helping or Hurting Your Business?”
11 tangible steps to improve company culture
In its whitepaper, MAXIS GBN makes 11 recommendations to help management and human resources teams to change or improve workplace culture, such as encouraging employee autonomy or investing in volunteer work. All these initiatives can positively impact employee perceptions of their company. A survey has confirmed that employees care: 82% of respondents** said company culture is key in deciding whether to work for an organization.
